32 - Discovering the Hypogeum Mill (Presicce)
Presicce with its 23 frantoi ipogei (hypogeum oil-mill), mostly situated among ancient alleys, and the central piazza del Popolo, are unique in the Salento territory. Among these, eight mills are located under Piazza del Popolo, covering an area of about 1000sqm, a small treasure of industrial archeology.
A suggestif and interesting way with the visit to the ancient village that underneath through the alleys, the squares and the houses at the court, the important noble residences, the churches and chapels, the frantoi ipogei of Via Gramsci and Piazza del Popolo.
The visit ends with the Civiltà Contadina Museum, located inside Palazzo Ducale. It completes the picture by providing important evidence of local peasant culture with particular regard to the aspect of everyday life, agricultural work and the "crafts" practiced by these people.
At the end of the visit, snuggling under the shade of centennial olive trees, immersed in the Salento countryside. A lunch awaits us, full of freshly baked terrines, olives and the classics of the Apulian tradition such as friselline, taralli, focaccia and fresh cheeses accompanied by a good glass of wine. What privilege is it to be able to taste two types of oil while sitting on the ground from which it sinks its roots ... in complete silence and undisturbed from the sounds of the city!
